As of 1st January 2018, nationals of all countries receive a visa on arrival at Kigali International Airport and all land borders. A single-entry tourist visa costs US $50 (exclusions apply for select countries and is valid for 30 days ).

The Rwandan Franc (RWF) is the currency. Foreign currencies can be exchanged at banks, airports, and authorized forex bureaus. Major cities also have ATMs that accept international cards.

Kinyarwanda is the national language, but English and French are also official languages. Swahili is widely spoken, especially in urban areas.

Rwanda operates on Central Africa Time (CAT), which is GMT+2.

Rwanda has a temperate tropical highland climate, with lower temperatures than typical for equatorial countries. Light, breathable clothing is suitable year-round, with warmer layers for evenings. Rain gear is advisable, especially if traveling during the rainy seasons (March-May and October-November).

Rwanda has good mobile coverage. Visitors can purchase a local SIM card, which is a cost-effective way to make calls and use data. Ensure your phone is unlocked before traveling.

Rwandan cuisine is diverse, with dishes like ‘igitoki’ (banana-based dish) and ‘brochettes’ (meat skewers). Kigali offers a variety of international restaurants as well.

There are no rail services, and the most popular form of public transport is shared minibuses. In Kigali, buses operate a smart card system called Tap&Go. Akagera Aviation provides helicopter transfers and tours. You can use the most convenient mode of transport to Rwanda by air, water, or road transport. Rwanda has a very high degree of safety and security. The 2018 Global Law and Order report has ranked Rwanda second in Africa.

Rwanda uses Type C and Type J plugs, and the standard voltage is 230 V. Travellers may need a power plug adapter and/or voltage converter for their devices.

Typical business hours are from 08h00 to 17h00 Monday to Friday. It is important to be aware of public holidays, as businesses and government offices may be closed

Hand hygiene is also very important, especially before eating. Generally, tourists are advised against drinking tap water in Rwanda. In Kigali, some visitors who have a strong stomach and do not mind the smell of chlorine do drink from the tap, but bottled water is always recommended.

The Rwandan franc(Rwf) is the principal currency, although US dollars are widely accepted. Expect to pay for local services in cash, in Rwandan francs.
