AfrEA Launches Volume 1 of the Made in Africa Evaluation Handbook

As part of its 25th Anniversary celebrations, the African Evaluation Association (AfrEA) launched Volume 1 of the Made in Africa Evaluation (MAE) Handbook, a groundbreaking resource that marks a new era in African-led evaluation practice.

The launch, held on June 16, 2025, in Addis Ababa, was a highlight of the three-day celebration, drawing evaluators, policymakers, academics, and development partners from across the continent and beyond. The Handbook represents a culmination of years of collaborative effort to define, document, and promote evaluation approaches that are rooted in African contexts, values, and knowledge systems.

The MAE Handbook Volume 1 is a declaration of Africa’s intellectual sovereignty in the field of evaluation. It captures the essence of the African Evaluation Principles (AEP) and the Made in Africa Evaluation philosophy, offering practical tools, methodologies, and case studies that reflect the continent’s diversity and complexity.

Launching the handbook, Mrs. Adeline Sibanda, the 10th AfrEA President, highlighted that this was not just the launching of a publication, but the celebration of collective efforts, vision and commitment to excellence in the field of evaluation. She added that the handbook serves as a valuable guide for evaluators, urging all stakeholders to make good use of the resource.

A Resource for the Continent and Beyond

The Handbook is intended to serve as a foundational text for training, policy development, and evaluation implementation across Africa. It also solicits the engagement of global evaluators with African perspectives and with the objective to contribute to a more pluralistic and inclusive evaluation discourse.

AfrEA invites all stakeholders to adopt and adapt the Handbook in their work, and to contribute to future volumes through shared learning and innovation.
