Meet Dr. Mjiba Frehiwot, new Editor-In-Chief of the African Evaluation Journal

The African Evaluation Association is pleased to introduce Dr. Mjiba Frehiwot, the new Editor-In-Chief of the African Evaluation Journal, a flagship initiative of AfrEA. Dr. Frehiwot is a Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of African Studies, University of Ghana. Mjiba thinks deeply about how to decolonize and re-Africanize knowledge production in Africa. She engages in debates, discussions and research around Made in Africa Evaluation and its ability to serve as a vehicle for development in Global Africa.

Her primary research focuses on Pan-Africanism, African political thought, Made in African Evaluation and social movements in Global Africa with a focus on Ghana, Tanzania and the United States.

Dr. Frehiwot is engaged with several funded projects that centre questions of decolonization, African Agency and Pan-Africanism. She released her first film titled “Umoja: Africa Must Unite Now” in 2022 and screened it in multiple countries inside and outside of the African continent. She is also the Treasurer of the African Studies Association of Africa (ASAA).

Most recently, she co-edited two critical special issues. The first is co-edited with Dr. Cheikh Thiam in Global Africa Journal titled, Pan-Africanism, African research and global issues. The second is co-edited with Mark Abrahams in the African Evaluation Journal, titled, Dr. Sulley Gariba Memorial Issue – Addressing Knowledge Asymmetries. She has published several journal articles, book chapters and technical reports.

Dr. Frehiwot, therefore brings a wealth of experience and a deep commitment to advancing the field of evaluation in Africa. With a distinguished career in both academia and practice, she has consistently demonstrated her dedication to rigorous and impactful evaluation work.

Her leadership and vision will undoubtedly guide the African Evaluation Journal to new heights, fostering a platform for innovative research and dialogue that addresses the unique challenges and opportunities within the African context.

Dr. Mjiba Frehiwot is taking over from Dr. Mark Abrahams who did and extraordinary job bringing the journal to its current level from inception. We are confident that under her stewardship, the AEJ will continue to thrive and contribute significantly to the field of evaluation.
